Servant Systems is a software development and integration firm. We provide software solutions to a wide variety of businesses. We have particular skills and experience with the unique needs of the franchise community, but have also helped many different businesses with their information technology needs using the latest proven technologies.

  • Don DeSmith
    Don DeSmith
    President & CEO

    Don DeSmith has over 30 years of experience in software development and software consulting for franchise systems, business and government. He has acted as Project Manager and/or Senior Consultant on a number of consulting and development projects. Don holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Astronomy from the University of Michigan, a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering (CICE) from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.

  • Bruce Franson
    Bruce Franson
    CTO & Vice President

    Bruce is Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Servant Systems and has been developing software on a variety of platforms since 1980. He has worked on a variety of large projects including the in-store system for Domino’s Pizza, multiple projects for franchise based companies, PeopleSoft implementations. He was one of two architects for the largest magazine and book publishing software system in the world. When not working, Bruce enjoys working with non-profits, backpacking and sailing. Bruce holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

  • Adrian Forbes
    Adrian Forbes
    Senior Software Engineer

    Adrian started using computers in 1984 at the age of ten. Throughout his life, he utilized computers as a homework aid, including writing small programs to help solve his Geometry class problems. Adrian graduated with a degree in Computer Science from The University of Iowa in 1998 and has been a web application developer since 1999. He enjoys time with his family (including furry dog child, Cody), travel, brewing beer, competing in triathlons, and DIY projects around his log home.

  • Ben Carpenter
    Ben Carpenter
    Software Engineer

    Ben has been at Servant Systems since 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from the University of Michigan. After college, he did work on an experimental medical device for the University of Michigan Health System. He now handles a variety of tasks, from support to testing to development on both the front and back end of Servant Systems’ SmartWare product. While away from the office, Ben enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and performing goofy songs to entertain his kids.

  • Brian LaLonde
    Brian LaLonde
    Senior Software Engineer

    Brian brings a web programming background to Servant Systems and has now taken the dive into Web and Native Mobile programming. He cut his teeth on projects while at University of Michigan (B.S. Computer Science) and then for years on “side projects” while working as a Christian Missionary. You can often find him outdoors during the summer leading youth backpacking trips.

  • Dave Flanagan
    Dave Flanagan
    Senior Software Engineer

    Dave started working with Servant Systems in 2001 and has worked with many of the clients including Molly Maid, Mr. Handyman, DreamMaker, The Dwyer Group and ACSI. Dave’s current primary development languages include VB.Net and C#. He graduated with a B.S in Computer Engineering in 2001 and M.S.E in Computer Engineering in 2003 from The University of Michigan. Outside of work Dave enjoys rooting for UM and Detroit sports teams with his kids and tinkering around with different house projects.

  • Kevin Sehl
    Kevin Sehl
    Senior Software Engineer

    Kevin has over 25 years of networking, development and teaching experience.  A former Microsoft Trainer and SQL Server DBA, Kevin specializes in the Microsoft development stack including VB, C#, WPF and WCF.  His background is in Real Estate MLS software as well as many years in the automotive industry.  In his spare time, he enjoys travelling to exotic  dive spots and as well as taking his family to new and exciting places.

    Scott Hein
    Senior Software Engineer

    Scott began coding at the age of ten, attempting to write the computer games his parents never wanted to purchase. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Eastern Michigan in 2006 with a BS in Computer Science, he began working in the industry as a web developer. In 2009, he spent a nine month period volunteering in Lithuania at LCC International University, where he helped to create an online faculty/student portal. Scott is an avid reader, and also enjoys playing music in his spare time.

    Senior Software Engineer

    Larry has worked for Servant Systems since 1993. During his time with Servant Systems he has met Bill Gates twice when winning the Microsoft Windows World Open competition in 1994 and 1995. Larry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Michigan. His hobbies include birding, stargazing (when it is not too cold), astronomy, and genealogy research.

    Jeff Cegelski
    Senior Software Engineer

    Jeff started his coding career in 1987 writing commercial rating software for independent insurance agents. After 15 years he pursued a new opportunity and began writing software for franchisees. During his career, Jeff held a variety of development positions including senior developer, supervisor, manager and project lead. In his free time, he enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.

    Franchise Support Specialist

    Glenna is a graduate of Wayne State University (BS in Computer Science). She does technical support for one of Servant Systems’ products, and has found she prefers it to programming. She enjoys music, books, writing, and video games.

  • Katie Dobbins
    Katie Dobbins
    Software Engineer

    Katie graduated from Michigan Tech with a degree in Computer Engineering. She started working for Servant Systems in 2017, doing web and mobile development. Katie is a polyglot, her primary languages being Java, C#, Javascript, and Objective C. She enjoys programming while listening to Disney Princess music (the guys insist she uses earbuds – don’t know why…). Katie plays the string bass and electric bass at her church and spends a lot of time hanging out with friends and family.

    Karlena Felan
    Quality Assurance Specialist

    After graduating college in 2003 with a degree in Computer Network Systems and Network Security, Karlena started working as a technical support analyst. Within a year she moved into a senior technical analyst position, and then a year later joined the development team as a quality analyst and software tester. She has over 12 years of experience in the franchise and healthcare computing industry and brings with her an extensive knowledge of standard software practices, quality assurance testing, teaching, and technical documentation writing. Karlena enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Her hobbies also include a wide spectrum of crafts from cross-stitching to stained glass work

  • Shelby Ripley
    Shelby Ripley
    Franchise Support Specialist

    In 2017, Shelby graduated from Hillsdale College, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in History and Latin. Naturally, he took to programming and serves as the Domino’s franchise support specialist for Servant Systems. Since joining the company, he has learned to program desktop applications in Microsoft NET. Outside of work, Shelby enjoys spending time with family and friends and improving the home he shares with his wife whom he met at college. Shelby also enjoys reading and arguing about ancient Latinate tomes as well as modern volumes.
